The product is first sealed in a low pressure vacuum. The only gas plasma required is nitrogen, but it is often done using hydrogen, argon, and methane. Unlike gas nitriding, these chemicals are not the main mechanism of the method. As soon as gases fill the back, high-power electrical fields bathe the product in a constant voltage and form ionized molecules. This is plasma. Typically you need a certain temperature for nitrogen to be ready for this process. While the temperature is regulated in plasma ion nitriding, it is electricity that causes the reaction.
